What is shamanism?

The word shaman originated in Siberia and is derived from the Tungusic word saman (Eliade, 1964, p.4). It’s literal meaning is “one who sees in the dark” (Ingerman, 1991, p. 18). Michael Harner, anthropologist and founder of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, states that shamanism represents an ancient methodological approach to the healing of both mind and body and is evidenced to have originated at least 40,000 years ago though, some anthropologists believe it to be 100,000 years old or older (Ingerman, 2000).
